  In 2004 I paid Mary MacPhee $80 for 8 prenatal classes. After my third class I was induced and lost my son to a fatal chromosomal abnormality...then my partner left me and I ended up alone and unable to work. I asked Mary to help me out by returning my unused $50 as I was literally starving and scraping by. She told me that it was not her policy to give refunds and as I pleaded with her she told me to "go see a counselor" and hung up. It was awful and she was truly heartless. FAR from what you would expect from a yoga teacher. Just for the record, I now live on the west coast, am happily married and have just finished my own yoga teacher training. I hope she never treats anyone so terribly again!

  Rachel's is such a sad story. I am sorry she has related it this way, given that she was offered a caring ear, suggestions for support and to take any other yoga courses to honour the classes paid and assist in her healing. The unfortunate situation in pregnancy is that you can have complications and for this reason it is possible for a prenatal yoga teacher to essentially lose her group of students due to medical concerns. The policy to offer makeup classes rather than not refund for this group is due to the much higher chance of a class that a teacher has planned and prepared for, even paid to rent a space for, dissolving due to health concerns, and the teacher with bills to pay and no students. Students under the policy are offered supported in options for other yoga for well being and there is an equitable exchange of goodwill.
